Misty Heights Bird Hide

We started building of our Bird Hide in Mid West Wales in March 2025. From the outset, we aimed to make it as versatile as it is comfortable. We packed in plenty of home comforts – underfloor heating, wi-fi and tea and coffee facilities. So our hillside hide is a wonderful space to spend a few hours. And the views are stunning too!

Capacity

While the hide has plenty of room, we’ve decided to keep it limited to three people — or four, including Leigh, during workshops.

Luxury Bird Hide in Mid West Wales

The hide is perfectly located with stunning views across the Teifi Valley in Mid West Wales.
Set in the grounds of our Coedmor Cottages holiday lets, it is flanked by Beech, Alder, Willow, Ash and Hawthorn trees.
It attracts a myriad of garden and woodland birds. We also have Buzzards, Red Kites and Sparrow Hawks visit regularly,
although this of course cannot be guaranteed.

Location Location Location

The hide is dual aspect. It has two shooting windows overlooking the drinking pool facing north and two shooting windows overlooking the various perches facing west. The long windows allow wide viewing angles, creating multiple shooting opportunities.

The hide is nestled in front of a long hedgerow alongside a natural drainage stream. This provides a fresh supply of water to the reflection/bathing pool. The west-facing windows look out over the picturesque Teifi valley. Around the hide there are numerous bird-attracting trees including Alder, Ash, Beech, Hawthorn and Willow.

We have purposely kept the land around the hide semi-wild to ensure a natural habitat. This is both perfect for attracting wildlife and photographing birds in their natural setting.

We’ve placed a variety of interesting perches across the whole shooting area. The perches are changed and adapted frequently in keeping with the seasons and the ever-changing variety of birds.

The Bathing Pool

Once the hide was finished, we turned to creating the raised drinking / bathing pool. Unlike a traditional reflection pool, we designed it to have the appearance of a wild pond with carefully shaped borders and landscaping. Perfect for capturing genuine “in-nature” style images.

The pool is six feet wide and twelve feet long and is visible for shooting from both of the north-facing windows. We’ve placed perches around the pool for additional photographic opportunities. The water is approximately two inches deep with a black rubber liner. Although not strictly presented as a reflection pool, this setup does work perfectly well to capture stunning bird reflection photographs.

We raised the pool off the ground so it is the perfect height to view from the hide windows and achieve perfect reflection images. The far end and the long sides have been thoughtfully landscaped to create a natural “pond” setting and will be changed periodically to ensure repeat visitors to the hide get an even better variety of images.

We built a dry stone wall around the pool which provides more perching opportunities for visiting birds and potential habitat for small mammals too.

Versatile Viewing & Shooting

Each shooting window has a glass “inner” which is hinged to allow upward inward opening. Split camouflague netting is fixed within the window opening allowing outside access to long lenses. The camouflage netting is transparent enough to see through and not miss any action whilst at the same time providing excellent privacy from the birds. The netting is fixed via velcro and can be removed for less hidden shooting and viewing. Each of the shooting portals has a large exterior shutter hinged at the top to allow upward outward opening when shooting. These provide excellent protection for cameras and lenses should it be raining as well as providing extra screening from the birds.

Achieving that elusive stand-out photograph sometimes requires sitting for several hours at a time in a cold, draughty uncomfortable hide waiting for the action to appear.
